View HoursLong before University Circle became a destination with many of the cultural institutions that now grace Wade Oval, there was Lake View Cemetery. Founded in 1869 by pioneering leaders of Cleveland, Lake View is one of the largest and most beautiful garden cemeteries in the United States.
Modeled after the Victorian and Edwardian garden cemeteries of France and England, Lake View is filled with dramatic natural landscapes, curved roadways, artful plantings, and carefully designed monuments. It was designed as a rural retreat for urban dwellers to reconnect with the beauty and healing qualities of nature.
Lake View performs hundreds of burials per year – nearly two per day. With interment space available for over the next 100 years, our Memorial Advisors are fulfilling the pre-planning and emergency needs of families and their loved ones daily.
Whether you plan to visit for the day or stay for eternity, Lake View Cemetery is open to all walks of life. With 285 breathtaking acres and thousands of burial sites to choose from, we offer exceptional, affordable, and highly reverential resting places to all people.
At Lake View, we have two organizations, each with its own important mission.
The Lake View Cemetery Association is a provider of interment services to all races and religions. It is committed to preserving the cemetery, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, as a historic burial ground that creates a welcoming environment to bereaved families. In pursuing this vision, Lake View Cemetery Association preserves and honors the heritage of past generations, serves and respects the needs of the present generation, and provides a legacy for future generations.
The Lake View Cemetery Foundation works to ensure that the beauty of Lake View Cemetery’s historic buildings, monuments, and gardens will be preserved for future generations to enjoy and to provide educational outreach programs to benefit and enrich the community.
Lake View Cemetery has a rich history dating back to 1869 when Cleveland’s leaders created the vision and purchased the land. View our timeline to learn about important milestones in the history of Lake View, from the beginning to present time.
Our entire organization at Lake View is here to serve all those who visit our grounds. Many of us have specific roles, but we all come together as a team to keep Lake View open and beautiful every day of the year.
Lake View Cemetery Association and Lake View Cemetery Foundation both have dedicated people who help provide oversight to the leadership and staff. We are always seeking others who are passionate about Lake View and willing to share their talents and time.
Lake View is often in the news, whether it’s a feature from a national publication like The New York Times, or a highlight from the local media about an event or our daffodils blooming, we welcome the coverage and appreciate being in the spotlight!
We like the share stories about the people and families who are buried at Lake View, but also those who support us while living. We share these profiles and articles to educate as well as inspire, and we hope you find them interesting.
Our gift shop has a variety of Lake View Cemetery logo items, as well as books about the cemetery, its structures and some of the people who chose us for their final resting place. You can purchase items directly on line.
Lake View Cemetery is an outstanding place to work. We offer numerous benefits, a mission-driven culture, and the opportunity to help sustain one of the most beautiful, historic cemeteries in the country. Please consider joining us.
